How do you know when the best thing to do is use other people’s Facebook groups and how do you know when it’s time to start your own?
Barbz Alejandra: First ask what’s your intention?
Usually when you first start out, you’re using other people’s groups, because even if you want to start your own group, you have to go where your ideal clients and members are hanging out.
After that, how do you know if you’re going to expand in your own group? Number one: strategically, does it make sense? I didn’t have the strategy to execute at the beginning, so starting my own group felt like climbing Mt. Everest. So strategy-wise, think through all the things you’ll have to do.
Create content, check notifications, create a challenge--are you willing to do these things to keep a group running?
Creating a Facebook group is a tool like anything else. And if you’re going to do it, you need to do it right. I have a spinning bike, it’s a tool, it works wonders and I could have some great legs if I wanted. But if I don’t walk down there and get on the bike for at least 25 minutes a day, nothing is going to happen. Or if I do it once a week, then something will happen, but it’ll be so small I might think this bike doesn’t work! Everyone can use the bike differently, and that’s ok. If you want to sprint on the bike for a shorter amount of time, or you want to go more leisurely for a longer time, both are ok. Same with your Facebook group. Align it to your strengths and weaknesses.
There are always going to be pros and cons to starting your own group and those will vary between people. It may be a little more work, but if you look at it like fun, it doesn’t feel too much like work. You may have to show up more, and come up with a content strategy, etc. But it’s YOUR group, you can do whatever you want, whenever you want. You have full control. You can sell all day if you want to (which I don’t recommend ), but you could if you wanted to, because it’s your group and you make the rules.
